About the Watch

The first IWC Aquatimer was presented at the Basel watch fair in 1967. Unlike its competitors, the Aquatimer had a unique feature: it was waterproof up to 200 meters, but with a significant difference. Instead of a classic external bezel, the IWC Aquatimer Reference 812AD had an internal bezel located under the glass, which could be adjusted using a second crown. This unconventional solution for displaying dive time was surprising because it had the advantage of not compromising water resistance. However, a second crown could also be a potential weak point that could allow water to enter. IWC patented this technique, as evidenced by the various references with Brevet engravings on the case back.

About the Brand

The heritage of IWC is deeply rooted in American pioneering spirit and entrepreneurship. Florentine Ariosto Jones, a watchmaker from Boston, founds the International Watch Company in 1868. He draws on the help of eminently qualified Swiss watchmakers, modern technology, and hydropower sourced from the nearby River Rhine to manufacture pocket watch movements of the highest possible quality. The Rauschenbachs, an industrialist family from Schaffhausen, take over the company following Jones’ return to the United States. During its early years, IWC produces pocket watches with a digital “Pallweber” display, as well as wristwatches for women and men.
